BIRDAREA

WORLD  BIRD DISTRIBUTION DATABASE

BirdArea in its world version is a database management program that has detailed information about the range of every bird species. When used alone it can produce check lists for any major world area from the range data, with endemics labeled, that are invaluable when planning birding trips and during the trips. In fact, we sell BirdArea without BirdBase to world birding tour operators who use it to produce check lists for their clients. And some BirdBase owners do not have BirdArea. But most of them do because when BirdBase has recorded sightings BirdArea has many additional capabilities. Furthermore, BirdArea makes the BirdBase short list feature much more powerful.

  • BirdArea can list in detail the range of any bird in most recent annual update from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (see http://birds.cornell.edu/clementschecklist) of the list contained in the Sixth edition of the ABA-adopted book The Clements Checklist of Birds of the World (2007: Ithaca: Cornell Univ. Press). It does this by using the highly regarded range data collected by Shawneen Finnegan from more than 1000 different publications in 10 languages, and updated annually by her with information from Cornell plus many publications and private communications. Furthermore, it can make check lists with endemics labeled for all major world areas, that is for all nations, world faunal zones, ABA regions and areas, U.S. states, Canadian provinces and territories, and for almost all important islands or island groups.
  • Printouts of the check lists can have places for multiple check marks and/or for field notes. If BirdBase is used BirdArea can label birds already seen on each check list, make hit lists of birds not already seen, and find any recorded sighting in which a bird is outside its known range.
  •  If BirdArea is used BirdBase can switch to showing only names of birds whose ranges include any major world area when recording the sightings of a trip to that area. This makes recording much easier and also highlights any out-of-range sightings.
  • The annually-updated BirdArea range data come from more than a thousand authoritative publications as well as from dozens of experts who bird the areas. And BirdArea includes a utility called EditData which allows you to edit the range data yourself. Furthermore, you can start with range data for only the North American and Hawaiian species, at a reduced price, then add these data for the world species when your birding territory expands.
