BIRDLEXI

BIRD NAMES LEXICON

BirdLexi is a set of lexicon files that will add to the spelling checker of Windows, DOS, or Macintosh word processors the scientific and English common name of every bird in the world. A review in The Auk said it is "a welcome contribution ... handy for many writers."

The file BIRDLEXI.LAT contains each word in the Latinized scientific species, genus, family, and order names listed in the latest annual update of the sixth edition of The Clements Checklist of Birds of the World (2007: Ithaca, New York: Cornell University Press). BIRDLEXI.ENG contains the words in the English common names from the book that are not likely already to be included in a spelling checker. BIRDLEXI.SPC contains all the words in the two files just described. BIRDLEXI.SSP contains each scientific subspecies name in the updated sixth edition of Dr. Clements' book. And BIRDLEXI.ALL contains the words in BIRDLEXI.SPC plus those in BIRDLEXI.SSP. In each of these ASCII files every word is on a separate line. The words are in alphabetical sequence, have no duplications, and are entirely in lower-case letters.

The BirdLexi package contains instructions for adding the words in any of its files to spelling checkers of word processors like Microsoft Word that let users install the slightly more than 15000 words of BIRDLEXI.ALL in one or more auxiliary lexicons (which Word calls custom dictionaries) or word processors like WordPerfect that let users expand the main lexicon by that amount.
