BIRDAREA RANGE DATA EDITOR

We are delighted to announce that Shawneen Finnegan was able to resume her role as BirdArea range data editor on January 1, 2008. BirdArea users with suggestions for changes in the range data should send them to us by e-mail, and include references to any pertinent documentation. The e-mail will be forwarded to Ms. Finnegan -- and will be appreciated very much by her and by us.

FUTURE DATA UPDATE SCHEDULE FOR BIRDBASE, BIRDAREA AND EDITDATA

Henceforth we will issue species data updates for BirdBase, and species/ranges data updates for BirdArea and EditData,  soon after Cornell issues its species names and taxonomy updates in October of each year.

People purchasing new copies of the world versions of BirdBase, and/or BirdArea plus EditData, on or after August 1 of each year will be able to download at no charge from our web site soon after the Cornell Lab posts its species names and taxonomy update in October of that year a utility that automates putting the species data changes in BirdBase as well as all previously recorded sightings, and/or a species/ranges data update for BirdArea plus EditData.

FREE TRANSLATION UTILITY

If English is not your national language you may be interested in our new Translation Utility. It may also be of interest to people whose (British) English versions of some common names differ from Dr. Clements' (American) English versions.

We will send the utility to you in two e-mail attachments if you send SBSP e-mail requesting it. It is also available on a CD ROM for a small shipping charge if you order only it, or for no charge if you order it along with other software.

HANDLING INDONESIA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, MALAYSIA, AND EAST TIMOR

Following Dr. Clements' advice, BirdBase and BirdArea divide Southeast Asia into its major islands instead of into its nations because the avifauna change so much from one island to the next. Nevertheless, it is easy to make BirdBase produce lists of your sightings in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, or East Timor. Just
send SBSP e-mail asking for instructions and we will send them to you in an e-mail reply.

BIRDBASE UTILITY SHAREWARE FROM CGM TECHNOLOGY SOFTWARE

BB2eBirdtm  is a standalone utility that converts data exchange files of your BirdBase sightings into eBird Record Format so they can be added to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology database called eBird, which is used by research workers at the  Lab and throughout the world. It does not require the sightings of each trip be uploaded one at a time. Instead, sightings of many trips -- some of which were entered in BirdBase with no idea that they would later be used by a project such as eBird -- can be uploaded in one operation. Yet they will be easy for the scientists to interpret because of the way the sightings have been sorted and annotated. Here are reactions to BB2eBird by two eBird Project Leaders. "From the eBird perspective this looks great": Brian L. Sullivan; "I second Brian's comments that this is really excellent and will be great to release to our eBird users": Marshall J. Iliff.

Tripreporttm is a utility that uses BirdBase data exchange files to produce HTML formatted web pages. These can be published immediately on the Internet, or viewed and printed by your web browser, or sent to friends as e-mail attachments for viewing and printing by their web browsers. The program displays your sightings in a compact and attractive manner, with a variety of possible styles.

Shortlisttm saves and restores BirdBase short lists. Since loading a new short list into BirdBase overwrites the existing short list, you will find the program invaluable if you use one short list created manually with the BirdBase Specify short list option (such as My Locale) and also use some of the hundreds of short lists that can be created automatically by BirdArea. It will be equally worthwhile if you use more than one manually created short list (such as My Locale and My Home) even if no automatically created short lists are used.

Contact pbono@prba.com for more details and copies of Tripreport and Shortlist.
