In case your download does not appear to be successful, check the Troubleshooting section for a probable cause and a solution.

Step 1.   Click the appropriate link whose wording begins with Download the ...  , depending on what you are updating.

Step 2a. If your Web browser gives you the option of opening or running the download, then choose that option. Next confirm that you really want the download to be opened or run, if you are asked to do so. Then go directly to Step 5.

Step 2b. If not, then download to your hard disk in whatever folder or directory your Web browser indicates the download will be located. (Specify any convenient folder or directory if your browser does not provide a default location.) Also accept any change the browser decides to make in the name of the update file. (Some browsers will append a few characters to the filename.) Be SURE to make a note of where the downloaded file will be located and what its name will be.

Step 3a.When downloading is finished if your Web browser gives you the option of installing or running the download, then choose that option and then go directly to Step 5.

Step 3b. If not, then return to Windows by closing your web browser.

Step 4a. If you end up in Windows 3.1, then do the following: Maximize Program Manager; double-click File Manager in the Main Group; in the window on the left click the directory into which you downloaded the file; in the window on the right double-click the update file name or whatever name your web browser changed it to.

Step 4b. If not, and you end up in a version of Windows other than ME, XP, Vista, or 7 then do the following: Click Start; point to Programs; click Windows Explorer; in the window on the left click the folder into which you downloaded the file or double-click that folder in the window on the right; in the window on the right double-click the update file name or whatever name your web browser changed it to.

Step 4c. If not, and you end up in Windows ME, XP, Vista, or 7 then do the following: Click Start; double-click Computer; double-click Local Disk or Hard Disk; double-click the folder containing the download; double-click the update file name or whatever name your web browser changed it to.

Step 5.  Accept the default folder or directory into which files should be unzipped, provided this was your choice for the location of the files when you originally installed them. Otherwise type the name of the folder or directory in which you chose to locate those files (not forgetting to include the \). And leave Overwrite files without prompting checked. Then click Unzip.

Step 6.  At the success message, click OK then click Close.

Step 7a. If you reached Step 5 directly from Step 2a or 3a, then return to Windows by closing your web browser.

Step 7b. If not, then close the window by clicking the x at the right end of the top line.

Step 8.  When the download is finished start the updated program or programs in the usual way.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Description of problem Probable cause of problem
I downloaded the update, but it doesn't seem to have all the latest features. An earlier version may have been downloaded and is stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder or directory.  The browser has used the old file instead of downloading the new one.
Solution

Delete all temporary internet files from your computer and then repeat the download. What you do to delete temporary internet files depends on the operating system your computer uses:

  • For Windows 95 or 98, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Internet, click Advanced, click Settings, click Empty folder, click Yes, and when deletion is completed close all open windows by clicking the x in their upper-right corners.
  • For Windows ME, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, click Delete Files, click Delete all offline content, click OK, and when deletion is completed close all open windows by clicking the x in their upper-right corners.
  • For Windows XP, Vista, or 7, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet, then either click Internet Options, and then click Delete Files.  Or else click Delete Browsing History, then click Delete, and then click Delete Files. When deletion is completed close all open windows by clicking the x in their upper-right corners.
  • For other operating systems, what you do to delete temporary internet files is much the same.
