LEPILIST

LepiList is a database management program that lets you record all your sightings and/or collections of the butterflies and moths that form the order Lepidoptera. Then it puts these data at your fingertips by letting you produce from them any number of taxonomically sequenced lists and annual lists for the whole world, the major world faunal zones, North America and many other regions and areas such as Europe and Africa, every nation, every state or province or county of each nation, and any area specified by latitude and longitude or by name. The lists can show the details of every sighting/collection of each species and subspecies, or the details of only the first of them for each species and subspecies, or just the names of the species and subspecies seen/collected. You can also list the sightings/collections in all locations of any species or subspecies, list in chronological sequence all butterfly trips taken or the first sighting/collection for each species or subspecies, tabulate and list 4th of July counts and other population surveys, etc., etc. And producing the lists is as easy as recording the sightings.

LepiList knows the common and scientific names, and the taxonomical sequence position, of each of the more than 800 North American butterfly species and subspecies, as well as the names of their families and subfamilies. You can incorporate any future changes in the names or taxonomy of this species list. And you can add to LepiList, in taxonomical sequence, the names of moths you have seen/collected in North America or of butterflies and moths that you have seen/collected elsewhere. The program can accommodate more than 20000 species and subspecies! With LepiList you will never have to discard your database and start over again due to changes in the names or taxonomy of the North American butterflies, to an extension of your interest from butterflies to moths, or to an expansion of your interest from North America to other parts of the world. And the program's adaptability is accompanied by a very economical use of disk space -- the largest number of sighting/collection records you can accumulate in a lifetime will not begin to fill the smallest hard disk.
