MAMMAL DATA ADD-ON

A BIRDBASE PLUS BIRDAREA EXCLUSIVE

People who wish to record both the mammals and the birds they see on trips can use an inexpensive Mammal Data Add-On that gives BirdBase the ability to deal with all the world's mammal species in exactly the same way that it can deal with every bird species in the world. Furthermore, the add-on contains detailed information about the range of each of the species of mammals, thereby giving BirdArea the ability to make check lists with endemics labeled of the mammals of any of the hundreds of major world areas used by that program.

With the add-on installed in both programs, BirdBase plus BirdArea can do with mammals everything the powerful combination can do with birds. The major project of gathering information about the common name, scientific name, and range of each of the world's more than 5000 mammal species, the common and scientific names of their orders and families, putting all this in BirdBase and BirdArea files, and preparing a comprehensive list of references to the literature that they used, was carried out by Dr. Andrew Duff and Ms. Ann Lawson. They also published their work in the book Mammals of the World (2004: London: A. & C. Black).

If you are interested only in mammals, you can purchase at a reduced price BirdBase and BirdArea with only the North American and Hawaiian bird species and ranges. When the add-on is installed the programs will contain the species and ranges for all the world mammals.

HOW THE MAMMAL DATA ADD-ON IS USED

The add-on's installation utility creates a new folder on the hard disk. Next it sees if the BirdBase and BirdArea programs are present:

  • If BirdBase is found a copy of the program is put in the new folder, but with a list of mammal species, families, and orders instead of the list of bird species, families, and orders.
  • If BirdArea is found the same is done for that program and its EditData utility, but with mammal ranges instead of bird ranges.

Then desktop icons are installed for the BirdBase and/or BirdArea plus EditData programs used for mammals, with labels that distinguish them from the icons for the programs used for birds. Henceforth the bird icons start the programs when birds are to be treated and the mammal icons when mammals are to be treated.

The Mammal Data Add-On can be used with the Pocket PC Add-On.
