ALL SUBSPECIES ADD-ON

ADD SUBSPECIES TO BIRDBASE!

The All Subspecies Add-On installs in BirdBase the names of all the subspecies in our latest update of the sixth edition of The Clements Checklist of Birds of the World (2007: Ithaca, New York: Cornell University Press).

The names are in groups, one for each species in the book that has subspecies:

  • The bird whose subspecies form a particular group is specified by an abbreviation of its scientific name obtained by taking the first three letters of its genus, then a space, and then the first three letters of its species. This is the same scientific name abbreviation used in the BirdBase Sci.Find button.
  • If several birds having subspecies share the same scientific name abbreviation -- which happens very infrequently -- their subspecies groups are distinguished by headers giving the full scientific names of the birds.
  • Each group is also labeled by the number of the page in Dr. Clements' book where the group is located. This feature, which makes it much easier to use the book for help in deciding which subspecies to specify when entering sightings, is found only in our software.

With the add-on installed, after you have selected the species for which you are entering a sighting, one click immediately shows you all of its subspecies, a second click selects the proper subspecies, and a third click enters its name in the sighting note -- no typing required! Showing the subspecies names for a particular species when making a sighting display limitation takes one click, and putting the proper name in the limitation is done with a second click.
